The HRS Green Stay Initiative provides corporate travel and sustainability leaders with reliable, property-level data on the environmental impact of hotels. It shows standardized carbon, water, and waste footprints per room night, helping you measure, report, and reduce travel-related emissions across your lodging program.


The methodology is based on internationally recognized standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, ISO 14067, and the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI), ensuring that your company’s reporting meets global compliance standards.

HRS supports corporate clients in achieving their sustainability goals through a three-step approach:

• Report: Access accurate, property-level emissions data to measure Scope 3 business travel impact.
• Reduce: Use data insights to embed sustainability criteria into sourcing, steer travelers toward efficient hotels, and monitor improvements over time.

• Remove: Compensate for unavoidable emissions via verified climate protection projects integrated in the HRS ecosystem.

This end-to-end process allows companies to manage environmental impact proactively and demonstrate measurable progress against ESG and CSRD requirements. Green Stay provides property-level carbon, water, and waste data that can be aggregated across your lodging program to calculate emissions for Scope 3 Category 6 (Business Travel).


Each hotel’s footprint is calculated according to the ISO 14067 and GHG Protocol standards and displayed in consistent units — carbon (kg CO₂e per room night), water (liters per room night), and waste (kg per room night).

This allows you to integrate emissions data directly into your internal sustainability reports and CSRD or ESG disclosures.

Each hotel’s environmental footprint is benchmarked against others in the same region, resulting in an efficiency class (A–D) based on quartile distribution:


• A: top 25%
• B: next 25%
• C/D: lower 50%

Joining Green Stay is completely free of charge. Participation is included within HRS’s corporate lodging and meetings solutions, and there are no additional costs for corporates to access sustainability data, reporting, or benchmarking within the HRS platform.

Green Stay is not a certification or eco-label. It is a data and evaluation framework that aggregates verifiable environmental data from hotels using a standardized and audited methodology. While many hotels display their sustainability certifications within Green Stay, hotel performance within the Green Stay assessment is determined solely by data-driven results, not by self-declared claims or marketing labels. This ensures that reporting is objective, comparable, and globally consistent.

The Green Stay methodology is independently audited by GUTcert, an accredited German certification body (DAkkS). The audit confirms alignment with ISO 14067 Product Carbon Footprint (Scope 1, 2, and partial Scope 3 ) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol standards. Hotels provide their data through the Green Stay audit platform and confirm its accuracy under binding Terms & Conditions. HRS applies automated anomaly detection and regional benchmarking to identify implausible values, ensuring that the data your company relies on is credible and comparable.

Yes. HRS extends the Green Stay methodology to the Meetings & Groups segment, providing comparable emissions data for venues and events. This enables companies to apply the same “measure–reduce–report” logic across both lodging and meetings, supporting a unified sustainability strategy.

Green Stay prevents misleading sustainability claims by focusing on data transparency and a structured methodology:

• The methodology is science-based and developed in alignment with ISO 14067.
• Hotels cannot purchase additional visibility or claim Green Stay participation in external marketing materials.
• Data is standardized and benchmarked before being displayed. Independent verification assessment applies only to properties participating in the Professional level.

Hotels participating in Green Stay are encouraged to update their data annually. This helps ensure that information used for corporate reporting remains current and reflects recent operational improvements. Outdated or incomplete data automatically reduces a hotel’s Data Quality Score, ensuring transparency in the benchmark results displayed to corporate clients.
